Pros and Cons of Information Technology

Information technology (IT) refers to the use of computers, networking and other devices to create, store and secure all forms of electronic data or information. IT includes several hardware and software layers that are used to perform essential functions. Hardware in IT refers to the physical equipment, while software refers to the applications. With technology rapidly advancing every passing day, the IT industry is evolving with more and more people looking to make a career out of it. Now that we have a brief understanding of Information Technology (IT), let us take a look at the pros and cons of it.

Pros:

Globalization: This is one of the biggest advantages of the evolution of Information Technology. IT has not only brought together various parts of the world, but has also made it easier to share information efficiently. IT has also helped remove the geographical barriers between different countries.

Communication made easier: Information Technology has also paved way for easy and effective communication between people in different parts of the globe with the help of text messages and emails.

Protecting information: Information technology not only helps in storing data, but also in protecting them. IT has made it easier to have a hold over data that is being shared online, in order to prevent information from being damaged or leaked.

Time –saving: Information technology has helped in computerizing various business processes, which in turn, has saved a lot of time and money. This has also increased the productivity and made the work atmosphere less stressful.

Cons:

Unemployment: Though information technology has various advantages, it comes with its own set of disadvantages. One of the most prominent disadvantages of IT is unemployment. Even through information technology has been extremely helpful in easing out complex business processes, it has led to job redundancies. Many manual jobs have been removed from the process, leading to unemployment.

Expensive maintenance: Though information technology has made various processes cost-effective, the cost of implementing this technology can be an expensive affair. IT systems also need to be maintained and upgraded from time to time, adding to the cost.

Privacy: Though information technology has made communication easier, it also has brought about privacy issues. With hacking and cell phone signal interceptions increasing, information that is supposed to be private can now be easily accessed by anyone.

CMR University – School of Engineering and Technology, offers B.Tech inInformation Technology.
