Top Tips for Smooth Transition from School to Pre-university

Looking forward to making a fresh start in pre-university after graduating from school? Well, then this is for you! The transition from high school to pre-university is a big moment and can definitely be overwhelming. You are bound to be nervous as you will be entering into a completely new environment with new responsibilities and opportunities. If you are experiencing such mixed emotions, don’t worry, we have you covered.
Here are a few tips to help you make a smooth transition as you begin a new journey!
1.   Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
The jump from high school to pre-university can be difficult. It will be a completely new environment and the friends you made in high school might choose other colleges, but it’s okay. You can make new friends and engage yourself by joining student clubs and associations that interest you. Get actively involved in various college activities like fests, workshops, and exhibitions.
2.   Find Mentors
Having a mentor at the time of transition from school to pre-university can be very helpful as they are available to advise and guide you through your college journey. It is important to identify professors, career counsellors, senior students, alumni members, and batchmates with whom you can discuss your career plans and prospects
3.   Strike a Balance Between Your Social Life and Studies
As a student who is about to enter pre-university (college), you need to put yourself out there and interact with many people. Extracurricular activities are a great way to socialise and build your network. Joining clubs and groups in your pre-university also help in developing your social network. However, it is equally essential to focus on your studies as it plays a crucial role in helping you get into your dream college.
4.   Utilise the Resources in Your College Wisely
Apart from the textbooks that you get, there are a plethora of reading materials available in your college library. Make use of these library books to gain extra information on your subjects instead of buying different study materials. Besides, make the best use of your professor’s free time or office hours to get some extra coaching or clarification on a topic you didn’t understand well.
5.   Have a Study Strategy
As a student, you may have a lot going on apart from academics. Though taking part in extracurricular activities are essential, academics should be given equal, if not more important. Have a thorough study strategy with set goals to make learning smoother. You can cover a particular day’s lesson on the same day or within the same week to ensure that it sticks to your mind. Avoid leaving most of the syllabus for the last minute. In the run-up to the exams, revision is always the key to success.
Hope the above tips come useful during your transition from school to pre-university. Once you take care of the initial hiccups, you can sail through the pre-university days making cherishable memories for life and getting into the course and college of your choice

Dear Students, Parents, and Staff Members,

COVID-19 pandemic has taken the entire world by surprise. No one has anticipated its impact in terms of mass infection and death across the globe in a span of a few months. Locked in our homes to protect ourselves with this deadly virus seems to be the only viable solution as of now.

Human race has faced many challenges in the past and has always come out of it - much stronger and better. Such events bring massive change in our society and also change our behavior. It helps us to understand priorities, dwell on what is important, and let go what is not.

This pandemic on one hand has created a great havoc especially in the weaker section of the society but on the other hand it gives us an opportunity to come out as a strong human race. One needs to remember that any one of us can fall due to chance or mistake but the important thing is how quickly we stand-up and begin the normal course of life towards our vision.

The lockdown has brought everything to standstill. We as academicians need to stand up quickly and respond to threat so that our student fraternity can continue their progress in terms of their learning outcomes. At CMRIT, we have come out with various initiatives to respond to the COVID-19 challenge so that the delay in our academic schedule is minimized without impacting the studies of our students. I am also happy to share that CMRIT’s leadership team responded in less than a week’s time realizing the impact of this lockdown.

CMRIT’s response to COVID-19 Lockdown

Each and every theory subject is having on-line teaching, videos are recorded, e-contents are shared, assignments are given, and doubts are cleared. Computer programming labs are being done on-line and other labs are introduced and procedures being discussed. Both faculty and students have now adapted to this new mode of pedagogy.

2.Remote Tie-Your-LACES sessions:
To make students industry-ready, TYL sessions are now conducted on-line, be it aptitude training, soft skill training, or programming skill development. The sessions are incorporated in class time-tables to make it convenient for students to attend them regularly.

5.Innovative Products and research proposals:
Our faculty and students are involved in creating products/parts to help fight COVID-19 and multiple proposals are being submitted to find short-term and long-term solutions for such a pandemic. We are making use of our Maker-space, Centres-of-Excellence, I&E cell facilities to support this initiative.

We are happy to share that all CMRIT staff have contributed one-day salary towards Karnataka Chief Minister’s Relief fund to fight COVID-19 pandemic. Some of our staff and students are also working as Corona warriors on the field to support the weaker section of our society.

Everyone is requested to keep themselves healthy by doing some physical exercises/yoga and be relaxed mentally as even the darkest night has a dawn to follow. We all know that a healthy person can fight even the deadliest disease by keeping his/her immune system strong. Let’s make the best use of the lockdown by enhancing our knowledge and skill and enjoy the journey despite challenges. Let’s also seek support from each other to keep ourselves motivated and make the best use of the new changed system and new processes around us.

Messages From CMRU Vice Chancellor on Covid-19 - CMRU

Dear Students, Parents and Faculty members,

We hope you are staying safe and healthy. The Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak has globally affected everyone's life.In view of the government directives suggesting a complete lockdown including closing of educational institutions as a preventive measure to stop the spread of the deadly Covid-19 virus, it is the need of the hour that we all as individuals and collectively as a Nation should support the government in this war with the virus to quickly come out victorious.

It’s crucial during this time of uncertainty with the virus spreading menacingly,we are faced with the vital task of protecting our students and employees. In times of significant disruption, our key goal is to help students get the support they need to meet the most essential course objectives. “No teaching on campus”challenge for the faculty in times of disruption may involve thinking creatively about how to build up students' knowledge and skills in different formats to satisfactorily complete the course work and assessment.

Some of the Covid-19 initiative taken by the University are:

1)  On Government directions, the on-campus classes were suspended, and the faculty were permitted to work from home. The University circulated an advisory, covering modalities for “no teaching on campus”, including, suggestions to use Google tools/ online Apps to cover the remaining theory courses syllabus and completing the internal assessments and also Studios, project training, and Internship etc.

2)  Right from the first day of closing down classes, the CMR University has proactively planned and organized itself to reach out to students through helpline@cmru.edu.in and subsequently through online classrooms for teaching and internal assessments. Online teaching- learning entails the faculty and the students interact synchronously. The faculty and the students are logged on to a virtual room where one can see and hear each other. It is a classroom in a virtual environment, for which we are receiving excellent feedback from the students and the parents. To take care of the students located at disadvantaged places, where bandwidth is not stable as expected, the faculty alternately use flipped learning environment. Here the faculty and the students interact asynchronously. The faculty upload the course content for the students to view/ read, ask questions, which can be answered by the faculty. Giving assignments, their submission and evaluation, student seminars etc. are also done in this mode. A judicious use of the combination of online and flipped tools provide a rich teaching learning experience, so also reaching out to all of our students.

3)  Course Planning is carried out from the University until the May end, expecting the worst case under the current context and hope to complete the academic requirements on time to the best satisfaction of all the stakeholders.

4)  Teaching from home clearly requires a different approach to blackboard teaching at classroom. All the faculty has been reoriented to use Zoom and Google Classroom tools for teaching and evaluating the students.

5)  To boost the morale of the students at this time of crisis,  the faculty are informing them about arrangements made for completing the syllabus/ internal assessments and promptly responding to the phone calls/ messages/ email from the students and parents. I personally advise the students to remain calm during this period of crisis and take care of the self and the family, not worrying about the Semester End Examinations. The SEE will be held only after the normalcy returns, providing them sufficient time to settle down and ensuring that the students are imparted sufficient training to face the examinations.

6)  As the country is also going through an economic trough, the University faculty have joined hands with the University Management to contribute a days’ salary to the Karnataka Government Chief Ministers’ relief fund to strengthen its hands to fight the Covid-19 virus.

7) Spending quality time at home is also a blessing in disguise for the students, faculty and researchers to positively engage in exploring additional avenues of knowledgeand benefit academically. There are several ICT initiatives of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), University Grants Commission (UGC) and its Inter University Centers (IUCs) – Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) and Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), in the form of digital platforms which can be accessed by teachers, students and researchers for broadening their horizon of learning. SWAYAM online courses, UG/PG MOOCS, e-PG Pathshala, SWAYAMPRABHA DTH channels, CEC-UGC YouTube channels, National Digital Library, Shodhganga, e-shodh sindhu, and Vidwan etc. are a few platforms which are freely accessible.

8)  As and when the Government notifies the lockdown withdrawal plan, the University will inform the students about the reopening date, standard operating procedure (SOP) for in the initial days, plan for tutoring to complete the syllabus, examination schedule and also help them to settle safely and comfortably.

We shall firmly resolve jointly to combat this pandemic by sternly following the directives from the Government, advisories from experts, taking all possible preventive and precautionary measures to overcome this tough time and emerge victorious very soon.

Wish you all the best.

(Prof. M. S. Shivakumar,
Vice Chancellor)
